When the universe has other plans for you: How to handle curveballs
Perfection can be very exhausting, and it often feels like the more we strive for it, the more life throws curveballs our way.

In today’s world, perfection is often seen as the standard – whether it’s in our careers, relationships, children, appearance, or social media presence. We have high expectations for ourselves, spurred by societal pressures, comparisons with others, and the desire to achieve our best. However, perfection can be very exhausting, and it often feels like the more we strive for it, the more life throws curveballs our way.

These moments when life seems to conspire against us often come in the form of unexpected setbacks, mistakes, or challenges that disrupt our carefully laid plans.

For example: For a while now, we wanted to swap the hustle and bustle of city life for the calm of the countryside. But for now, we are still in the urban jungle.

These moments feel particularly frustrating. It’s as if life is reminding us that no matter how much we prepare or how hard we try, perfection is elusive and sometimes unattainable.

This feeling of life “conspiring” against us isn’t just about the actual events that disrupt our plans; it’s also about the emotional impact. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, or even a sense of unfairness, as if the universe is testing us or rooting for our failure. The irony is that these challenges often come when we’re most focused on getting everything right, making the struggle feel even more pronounced.

Perfection is often an illusion, and the bumps in the road can remind us that life’s beauty lies in its unpredictability and imperfection.

However, these moments can also be opportunities for growth. They teach us the importance of embracing imperfection, resilience, and adaptability. While it might feel like life is working against us, it’s also pushing us to let go of unrealistic expectations and find balance. Perfection is often an illusion, and the bumps in the road can remind us that life’s beauty lies in its unpredictability and imperfection.

Understand that not everything is within your control, and that's okay.

And for whomever it feels like life is conspiring against your efforts, here is what you can do:

1 Embrace Imperfection
Perfection isn’t realistic. Accept that mistakes are part of your journey. Focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small victories along the way.

2 Reframe Your Mindset
Shift your perspective. When things don’t go as planned, you can turn frustration into an opportunity for growth. Understand that not everything is within your control, and that’s okay.

3 Prioritize Self-Compassion
Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend going through a tough time. And avoid comparing yourself to others.

4 Create healthy boundaries
Set realistic goals and know when to step back. If perfectionism is causing you stress or burnout, it might be time to take a break.

5 Practice mindfulness
Stay present. Mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing, can help you stay grounded and focused in the present moment.
Acknowledge your feelings and process them to move forward.

6 Find the positive in your experience
Surround yourself with sources, or people who inspire you to embrace imperfections and live authentically.

7 Keep your sense of humor
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Sometimes, the best way to deal with life’s unexpected twists is to laugh about them.
