FINO-25 / Making a Home

Our sunny rooftop apartment is a bright and peaceful retreat nestled in the second backyard, complete with two large sun terraces that amplify its airy feel. We love its loft-like atmosphere and unique floor plan.

The apartment spans two levels and was initially designed with an open maisonette-style upstairs. We later enclosed this area to create a separate unit with its own entrance and bathroom, which we rented out to a friend for a time.

The interior blends minimalism and boho chic, combining vintage furniture with modern pieces in vibrant colors. The minimalist structure and clean lines meet the eclectic and imperfect charm of bohemian style, enhanced by colorful elements and influences from different cultures. Each piece in our apartment has a story, from the vintage finds that add a touch of nostalgia to the bold, modern accents that make a statement.

This apartment also became a space for us to experiment with DIY projects, like restoring and customizing furniture. The renovated chairs, with their bright orange finishes and metallic legs, were a labor of love that added a playful touch to our home.
Similarly, the repurposed vintage lamps and the homemade lowboard showcase our penchant for blending old and new, traditional and contemporary.

“Living here, we learned that while the apartment's quiet, secluded location offers peace, it can feel isolating without a view or outside activity.”

The centerpiece of our apartment is a spacious, open-plan kitchen-dining and living area, illuminated by numerous windows, including patio windows, sloping roof windows, and skylights. This bright and airy space, with its dome-like ceiling, serves as a central meeting point and highlights the apartment’s generous layout. After an unfortunate flood in a previous apartment, this became our first home together, marking the start of our journey in defining how we want to create a home for ourselves where we explored the intersection of aesthetics and functionality.

Living here, we learned that while the apartment’s quiet, secluded location offers peace, it can feel isolating without a view or outside activity. We discovered the importance of having a sense of openness and connection to the outside world, especially when working from home. This experience has influenced our future housing choices, emphasizing the need for a balance between serenity and the vibrancy of daily life.

In the end, our rooftop apartment not only provided a beautiful living space but also taught us valuable lessons about our preferences and the kind of environment that nurtures our creativity and contentment.
