Two monks, one elderly, the other quite young, were walking along a muddy path in the rainforest. They were on their way home to their monastery when they met a beautiful woman standing helplessly on the bank of a raging river.
The old monk, recognizing the woman’s distress, lifted her up on his strong arms and carried her across. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck until he gently set her down on the far bank. With a graceful bow she thanked him, and the monks continued on their way in silence. Not far from the monastery gate, the young monk could no longer contain himself: “How could you take a beautiful woman in your arms? Such a thing is not befitting a monk!” The old monk looked at his companion and said, “I left her there. Are you still carrying her?”
